Swallows and Armenians is a passionate and personal project by Appleby artist Karen Babayan which celebrates the inspirational Anglo-Armenian family, the Altounyans, models for the Walker family in the classic children’s book by Arthur Ransome. The first part of this project, a book, exhibition and performance by Young Company launched in 2019 at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick. In 2020, the project flies the nest, with the exhibition touring to 3 further venues. Babayan is the guest artist in the CCA Gallery as well as expanding into the Parquet Gallery at The Old Fire Station, Carlisle in February; the exhibition travels to the Maritime Centre, Newbiggin-by-the-Sea, Northumberland in April/May before finally arriving at The Queen’s Hall in Hexham in June/July.
The exhibition of printworks, paintings and objects is expanded to include an art film and wall-based textworks. A newly launched audiobook, narrated by Persia Babayan-Taylor, a young Cumbrian actor will also be available to preview in the gallery alongside the exhibition. These contemporary artworks will be displayed alongside the historic collection of family portraits by Dora Altounyan, Mavis (Titty) Guzelian and WG Collingwood, generously loaned by the Guzelian family. Hyde Park Brass Band
Hyde Park Brass was born in 2015 as the product of a one-off performance at the University of Leeds. The boys immediately decided there was more to the band than just one gig, and that’s where the journey began. Building their name around their home city of Leeds, Hyde Park Brass began to curate and develop a rep combining a range of varied musical inspirations. This culminated in the production of their eponymous debut album in 2018, and since then the boys have expanded nationwide, bringing their unmistakeable party style to audiences across the UK and beyond.
